Virtual Games

I don’t have an iPhone, unlike some of the more financially lucky guys… but on my 23rd birthday my friends all chipped in and bought me an iPod touch, so… I do have the luxury to some of the apps produced for the mobile device.

The first game I was hooked on was 'Angry birds'… I was hooked on it not because I really liked it… but more because I was more kiasu and didn’t wanna lose ma' eggs to those stupid swine… Finally finished it a few months back… :D

The other puzzle like game that got my attention was 'Cut the rope'… Now this I felt was much more interactive than angry birds… as it really requires good timing and some co-ordination.

Cut the ropes to navigate the candy into the cute lil monster's belly

Just the other day, as I was browsing through new apps to download… it came to my attention that EA games are having a sale on their games. So I downloaded the SIMS3 at a heavily discounted price… I’m having some real fun with it… because apparently you can have gay marriages in the game :)

My character Tyler

My character (Tyler) is currently married to this culinary chef called Luke… how ironic right... And they do seem happily married… The only problem is, I don’t know how to get him to move in with me, and don’t know how to adopt kids…

The love of Tyler's life Luke

So I guess the game creators really need to think about giving gay couples in the game the option to adopt. All in all, the gay factor in the game makes it fun… definitely worth trying since its still currently heavily discounted. Haha.

Oil Turmoil

I’m a chemical engineer wannabe, and petroleum is one of our favourite industries, so I’ve taken a particular interest in the BP oil spill over at the Mexican Gulf. It is one of the biggest oil spills in the past decade and is estimated to cost BP over a billion US dollars (up-to-date) just to react to the spill.

Anyway, the spill on the 20th of April was caused by an oil rig blowout, which I’m pretty sure is just a fancy term for an error in design, in this case the design pressure. The platform in which the blowout occurred on was named the Deepwater Horizon, and the blow out caused an explosion on the platform itself killing eleven workers.

This oil spill is truly a major catastrophe, because experts has estimated that the amount of oil flowing out of the unplugged oil well (caused by the absence of the drill platform) was around 1.9 billion to 3.0 billion litres per day. I guess this goes to show that major oils are still only human and make human mistakes, despite them being one of the richest industries in the world and only hiring the cream of the crop to work for their companies. (that’s me ranting for not getting any interviews with major oils)

Well I’ve found this excellent site that puts the spill into a relative perspective so that we can understand the actual magnitude of this problem.

Here is the actual spill location in the Gulf of Mexico

This would be the equivalent spill radius if it was in Melbourne

And this is how it would look like relative to the size of Malaysia

Well I hope that puts into perspective how bad the oil spill actually is. And frankly my heart goes out the the people who have lost their lives working on the Deepwater Horizon platform, and to all the people whose lives are affected by this spill.

And in accordance to the main picture, if I had it my way, the oil spill would have been on a hot explosive mexican dude; and most certainly not an oil spill due to an explosion in the mexican gulf.

You Have 1 New Break Up Message(s) Received

Is there really such a thing as an un-messy break up? I presume all break ups are the same, it would most probably be very miserable for one or both sides of the break up. Personally I’ve never encountered any huge break ups, simply because I was never ever in a particularly deep relationship. So I guess I’m certainly no expert in this matter, but I’d like to talk a lil about it anyway.

Recently my friend, or should I say friends, since I know both sides of the party, got into a rather messy break up. One side isn’t sure about the decision, and the other side is totally devastated by the break up; factor in the fact that it was a LDR… lol very messy. In my opinion, the break up was made messier than usual because it wasn’t done in a proper manner; it was all ended with a single sms.

I’m of the school of thought that if you want to end something, it shouldn’t be done in such a nonchalant manner as an sms. It should be done face to face if possible, or at the very least through a phone call. But I suppose ending a relationship is a very difficult thing to do, and doing it face-to-face is certainly no easy task. But for goodness sake, don’t end it with a single sms. Its just too short, brief and incomplete. It kinda makes the whole relationship seem… meaningless and irrelevant.

To both my friends involved in the break up, I wish you guys the best of luck and all the strength and courage to get through it. And FFS call him to end it properly.

Gay Trending

There is this cool website called Google Trends, and it shows you a graph on how often a term is searched for, relative to the total number of searches globally. It also gives the list of the countries that searches that term the most often. The trending only starts from 2004, but none the less it’s interesting to see what people have been googling over the past few years. Being a science student, I have to admit that graphs get me excited, LoL… So I did a few random searches on gay topics…

I found that some gay topics are actually correlated to each other…

Gay Sex

Anal Sex

Gay Porn

These searches spiked in 2006, and I’m not sure why… but maybe that was the year that a lot of gays came to term with their own sexuality and came out to themselves. Something lil ol Ricky took too long to do… Something worth mentioning here is that Malaysia seems to have made it into the top five for both searches of Gay Sex and Anal Sex… Bearing in mind that we only have a population of twenty-eight million… That’s undoubtedly a very amazing achievement. LoL!

Other searches are more cyclical, for example the term Mardi Gras…

Mardi Gras

The Mardi Gras festivity is held sometime in February and March every year, so that clearly explains why the searches spike around that time every year. It’s a gay festival held in Sydney, that I hope to attend one day :)

Something comforting to know is that gay people are slowly building the confidence to come out of the closet.

Coming Out

As you can see how the term coming out is being googled more and more in a rising trend. And it’s probably because gay people want to find out more about coming out of the closet, and they turn to the internet to find out the best way to do so.

Well there are a ton of other things you can check out the trends of… so just head to the Google Trends website and see what the world is googling :)

*the google banner was taken without permission from Ashley... Ashley, if you see this and want it taken off... just message me. cheers

Measure Of A Man

So its been a long long while since I last blogged. Basically my exams is to be blamed for my absence in the blogsphere. Anyway, that’s all finally over and I’m actually back in Malaysia now… for my summer holidays. So something I noticed in some of my fellow bloggers posts were mention of free range chicken and free range eggs. I choose to take no side in the debate on whether free range livestock are better, but I feel its important that some people understand what they are fighting for.

I’ve heard somewhere before that a measure of a man is not in how well he treats his peers, but of how well he treats his inferiors. Haha, yea that’s what the title is all about… it isn’t really about measure any body parts in particular. So yea, I guess in some obscure sense… our live stock are considered our inferiors, and the way in which we treat them is a measure of how good a person we are.

I’ve seen scary pictures about livestock being mistreated, how they are confined to a small space… some barely moving more that a foot a day, and they are also supposed to be pumped full of medicine. The rational behind this is both evil, but understandable. How issit understandable? Well for one thing, our modern society has come to a stage where by eating meat as a form of protein has become a norm. This is certainly different from the stories I hear from my parents’ generation in the past. They always told of stories about how happy they were to have been able to eat chicken only during festive season… and apparently that’s less than ten times a year. Nowadays, we consume a lot of meat, particularly I think Malaysians consume a lot of chicken, because its not only cheap, but it also doesn’t conflict (much) with the halal issue- as most chickens are slaughtered the halal way in Malaysia anyway.

So imagine with the rising number of chicken consumption… is it actually practical to condemn commercial poultry farming and only go free range all the way? Let conduct a little thought process… suppose half the Malaysians consumer an average of two pieces of chicken a day, half of 20 million people is 10 million… and so lets say we averagely consume 20 million pieces of chicken a day. And the standard chicken is usually cut into nine pieces… so 20 million by nine is 2,222,222.22. So lets assume that its 2.2 million. So on average we eat 2.2 million chickens a day which comes up to a grand total of 1.7 trillion chickens a year. And remember this is just ‘if’ half of Malaysia eats an average of two pieces of chicken a day… I’m willing to bet that this amount estimated is probably less. But anyway, with such a huge number of chicken requirements, I guess it only makes sense to grow the chickens commercially.

And the rationale behind keeping the chickens confined and fully pumped with medication is simple, if they are kept confined its easier to round them up when its time to transport them to the slaughter house. I’m not sure if any of you tried to catch a ayam kampung (village chicken) before, but it is very difficult. Imagine how hard it would be to catch 2.2 million free range chickens a day just so that they can be sent to the slaughter house 0.o and the reason why they are pumped full of medicine is to make the grow faster… we would definitely need a lot of space if we wanted to only harvest chickens that grew at a normal rate. I think commercially farmed chickens nowadays take only 45 days to grow, but a supposedly normal growth-hormone-free chicken takes more than 3 months to grow? (correct me if I’m wrong here, cause I’m not too sure of this figure). So commercially, if we farm poultry the ‘cruel way’ we would need to have at any one time 2.2 million times 45days of chicken alive. But if we did it the free range way and not spurt the growth of chickens with growth hormones, we would need to at any one time have 2.2 million times of 90 days of chicken alive. That’s twice the amount. And thing about it… that’s 198 million chickens alive at any one time… cause it takes time to let the chicken grow from the egg stage to the slaughter stage. Imagine free range wise, if there were 198 million chickens alive at any one time and we are to give them one square meter of space to run for every chicken, that would be a grand total of 198 million square meters. Wow… a lot of space if u ask me.

Vegans would fight the battle a different way… instead of requesting farmers to not farm poultry the cruel way and switch to free range techniques. Their solution is much more extreme… and that is we should all give up eating meat all together and just eat vegetables. It is technically possible because we can get our protein requirements from the bean family. So whats the problem here? Apart from the fact that most people aren’t willing to give up meat (me included) there is also the fact of a possibility of a shortage of vegetables if everyone switched to just eating vegetables. Imagine if everyone only ate vegetables, would we have enough space to plant all the vegetables we need?

Space aside, vegetables also bring the huge problem of herbicide and insecticide usage in commercial vegetable plantings. Commercial use of these chemicals in the plantings of vegetation is very harmful to our planet, rising the concern of further polluting our (already quite polluted) water source and also the threat of hastening global warming.

Also a lot of commercial vegetables farmers in the world are now switching to planting crops related to biofuel, and there are mentions of a possibility of shortage in vegetables in certain parts of the world because of this. This is because its more profitable for farmers to plant crops for biofuel, such as sugarcane and corn. These crops are much higher in price due to their demand in making biofuel. So if everyone in the world switched to eating purely vegetables… would there then be a global shortage of vegetables?

My advice is simple, and haha frankly quite rational. As it goes now if you don’t feel bad eating meat (eggs included) farmed the ‘cruel’ way… then you most likely wont be swayed by anything you read. So my advice is for everyone to carry on as they have always been- remain status quo. Because not everyone can afford free range chicken and eggs, and not everyone can switch to just eating vegetables. So… haha I guess there isn’t much meaning to this post, but just to raise awareness on both sides of the debate of free range farming. Personally, I eat free range stuff but do not condemn the supposedly ‘cruel’ way some farmes grow their livestock. Hehe, I like to always remain politically correct. Cheers.

*the figures used in this blog is only based on my own thought process on the number of people eating chickens in malaysia. I did not consult the Malaysian poultry board.

The Battery Mystery

When I was in Malaysia during my vacation break, I noticed one small fact about my handphone… and that was the fact that it was never able to be fully charged. I know, weird right? But the truth is, no matter how long I charge the phone, the VERY last bar of battery cannot be achieved. Now that I’m back in Australia, I notice that not only my phone can be fully charged, but the charging time is also much faster. What’s the deal with this huh?

The grass is always greener on the other side… blah blah blah… But seriously, you mean we cant even fully charge our batteries now? It wasn’t a voltage problem, because Malaysia and Australia have the same voltage, 240V at 50 Hz. After some Googling on the web, I found that another Singaporean girl had the same problem as me, so I guess its not an isolated Malaysia problem, phew!!! Anyway, she even went through the extra step and find that she could fully charge the battery if she swapped her Singaporean sim with her Aussie sim card. Weird right?

Unsatisfied with her little sim card experiment, I went and looked up the manual book for the nokia phone, guess what I found? The battery has to be kept at temperatures of between 15oC and 25oC, in order for it to be in ideal working conditions! But… some people can have their phones charged fully… why? Malaysia’s weather varies from 23 oC to 32 oC … so should I buy a thermometer and put it next to my phone? Then I’ll know exactly when the best time is to charge it?

I like to think of it another way though, maybe I’m just too hot, so when I’m around the handphone, it just doesn’t charge properly :) Gosh I can already hear the jeers and boos from the readers, LoL.

Anyway, so what’s the real reason behind my phone not being able to be fully charge back home… Is it a mechanics with the sim card? Or is it my phone’s problem? Or is it a temperature related problem? To all you telecommunication engineers out there… If your nice and gay and single and available, oh and know the answer to my problem… contact me :)
